We participate in a Water Joint Programming Initiative targeting the valorization of food wastewater containing alkaloids for the production of added-value products. Our goal is to isolate microbial strains capable of converting the alkaloid content of the wastewater effluent from the lupine bean industry into products of pharmaceutical use (e.g. biologically active compounds such as cardiovascular drugs). Furthermore, we will develop a novel bioprocess targeting optimization of lupanine bioconversion into the desired product through the use of immobilized cells applying different supports (such as delignified cellulosic materials, gamma-alumina and alginate gels). We work closely with Dr. Drouza to identify the metabolic products from lupanine bioconversion.
